MY WAR DEAD
GRANGER, Samuel William - died 7th March 1917.
Samuel William Granger ws born in Islington, London, on 16th July 1880, being the eldest child of Samuel Granger, a furniture salesman, and his wife who was born Celina Jane Harris. He does not seem to have trained for any particular occupation, being a furniture loader in 1901 and a milk carrier at the time of the 1911 census when he was living with his widowed mother in Tottenham, north London. Samuel's father had died in 1907, aged 55 and 5 of his 10 siblings had also died by 1911.
Samuel did not marry and in April 1914 he emigrated to Ottawa, Canada, arriving in Quebec on the ship 'Ausonia' on 4th May; it appears that he intended working as a farmer. On 21st March 1916, Samuel joined the Canadian army, attesting for the 136th Battalion of Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. At some point, he transferred to the 87th Battalion and he suffered wounds from which he died on 7th March 1917, aged 36, at "No.6 Casualty Clearing Station", near Noeux-les-Mines, France. Samuel is buried at the Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension, near to the site of the casualty station. It is not known whether Samuel received any decorations.
Samuel was an older brother of George Granger who served in the British army and lost his life a few months later.
Samuel William Granger was my 2nd cousin, three times removed.
