HENRY ATKINS HORNETT : 1830 - 1853

Henry Atkins Hornett was born on 13th June 1830 and baptised on 5th June 1836, according to the baptism register of Christ Church, Cosway Street, Marylebone. At the date of his baptism, Henry's family was living at Duke Street, Marylebone, and the limited later evidence does indicate that Marylebone was his birthplace.

Henry was recorded in the 1841 census as a boy of 11, living with his parents and 4 siblings in Houghton Street, but in 1851 he was living away, at Bell Court, near St Pauls, where he was employed as a 'shopman'; this was probably in a draper's store. Henry was then stated to have been aged 20 and his birthplace was St. Marylebone, providing the only clear evidence of his place of origin. Henry did not marry and died from tuberculosis at the age of only 22, on 2nd April 1853; he died at his family's home, then 20 Wych Street, Strand, and was recorded as having been a draper's clerk. The family bible records that :

"Henry HORNETT, grandson, died April 2nd 1853 being (only?) 22 years of age - buried at Bloomsbury Burial Ground",

This entry in the bible was clearly made by his grandfather, John Atkins, who was more accurate about Henry's age than is his death certificate, which gives his age as 21. There is an entry in the register of St George's, Bloomsbury, stating that Henry was buried in that parish on 10th April 1853.
